Inventive storytelling
with immersive gamified
engineering challenges

A team-based physical-digital experience for museum visitors. Physical challenges in the gallery, digital design on the tablet, and a test flight in mixed reality.

What is Proto Steam?

Proto STEAM is a hybrid physical-digital experience for the Proto Invention Factory where teams complete engineering missions by designing their own airship.

Visitors solve hands-on challenges, use a tablet app to answer quizzes and customize their airship, then bring it into mixed reality on a Meta Quest 3 headset to fly it through a mission-based mini-game.

The experience lasts 60–90 minutes, supports up to five teams at once, and is available in English and Estonian.

A team.
A brief.
A challenge worth flying.

The full visitor journey, step by step.

Stap 1

1. Form a team

Two to five players choose a fictional client and receive an engineering mission through a short intro video.

Stap 2

2. Learn the brief

Each client has different priorities - speed, cargo capacity, comfort, noise, or stability - shaping the design challenge.

Stap 3

3. Complete museum challenges

Teams visit five physical stations, solve hands-on tasks, scan QR codes, and answer quizzes to unlock new airship parts.

Stap 4

4. Build the airship

Using a tablet configurator, players customize their airship with different components that affect cost, speed, lift, and style. Live progress bars show how well the design matches the mission.

Stap 5

5. Fly in mixed reality

In Meta Quest 3, the team’s airship appears on a real-world diorama and is flown through a mission-based mini-game.

Stap 6

6. Improve & complete

Teams refine their design, replay missions, and earn scores based on quizzes, engineering choices, and flight performance.

Your design takes off...
for real!

The mixed reality flight station is where Proto STEAM becomes a memorable immersive experience. Using Meta Quest 3 passthrough, players see their custom-built airship appear on a 3D diorama placed on a real table.

Two players can fly together in shared mixed reality while the rest of the team spectates on the tablet. Each mission features a different mini-game, and the airship’s behavior changes based on the components the team selected during design.

Interactive Experience

Built for museums

Designed to be operated,
not engineered.

Proto STEAM is built for a museum environment, not a development lab. One trained staff member runs the entire session from a single laptop. The system is intentionally local: no internet dependency, no cloud account, no per-player login. All play happens on a local Wi-Fi network that the museum controls.

Education

Designed to learn

STEAM in practice, not in theory.

Proto STEAM teaches STEAM concepts through hands-on decisions and visible trade-offs. Players explore topics like materials, aerodynamics, balance, measurement, and visual design through physical challenges, quizzes, and airship customization.

Flexible

Modular and
re-skinnable

Built once. Re-skinnable forever.

Proto STEAM was designed as a reusable platform. Its challenges, configurator, and mixed reality systems can be re-skinned for new subjects, exhibitions, or museums without rebuilding the technology from scratch.

A long collaboration

Proto STEAM is the most recent chapter in a partnership between Enversed Studios and the Proto Invention Factory. In 2020, Enversed designed and built the VR experiences for Proto's 19th-century educational museum.

In 2026, as Proto renewed its content for a new generation of visitors, the two studios returned to design a fully hybrid physical-digital learning experience, bringing the museum's physical exhibits and Enversed's mixed-reality work into a single coherent loop.

Under the hood

Proto STEAM is built on a small, well-tested technology stack, chosen for reliability in a museum context, not for novelty.

Unreal Engine 5
Powers both the tablet application (Android) and the Meta Quest 3 experience. One engine, one art pipeline, two delivery targets.

Meta Quest 3 mixed reality
Passthrough video, scene understanding, and shared spatial anchors keep two players aligned on the same physical diorama.

Local session server
A small Windows server tracks team state, brokers communication between tablets and headsets, and runs entirely on the museum's own network.

Modular content pipeline
Translations, quiz content, challenge data, and configurator components are data-driven for easy updating.
