A team-based physical-digital experience for museum visitors. Physical challenges in the gallery, digital design on the tablet, and a test flight in mixed reality.
Proto STEAM is a hybrid physical-digital experience for the Proto Invention Factory where teams complete engineering missions by designing their own airship.
Visitors solve hands-on challenges, use a tablet app to answer quizzes and customize their airship, then bring it into mixed reality on a Meta Quest 3 headset to fly it through a mission-based mini-game.
The experience lasts 60–90 minutes, supports up to five teams at once, and is available in English and Estonian.
The full visitor journey, step by step.
Two to five players choose a fictional client and receive an engineering mission through a short intro video.
Each client has different priorities - speed, cargo capacity, comfort, noise, or stability - shaping the design challenge.
Teams visit five physical stations, solve hands-on tasks, scan QR codes, and answer quizzes to unlock new airship parts.
Using a tablet configurator, players customize their airship with different components that affect cost, speed, lift, and style. Live progress bars show how well the design matches the mission.
In Meta Quest 3, the team’s airship appears on a real-world diorama and is flown through a mission-based mini-game.
Teams refine their design, replay missions, and earn scores based on quizzes, engineering choices, and flight performance.
Proto STEAM is the most recent chapter in a partnership between Enversed Studios and the Proto Invention Factory. In 2020, Enversed designed and built the VR experiences for Proto's 19th-century educational museum.
In 2026, as Proto renewed its content for a new generation of visitors, the two studios returned to design a fully hybrid physical-digital learning experience, bringing the museum's physical exhibits and Enversed's mixed-reality work into a single coherent loop.
Proto STEAM is built on a small, well-tested technology stack, chosen for reliability in a museum context, not for novelty.
Unreal Engine 5
Powers both the tablet application (Android) and the Meta Quest 3 experience. One engine, one art pipeline,
two delivery targets.
Meta Quest 3 mixed reality
Passthrough video, scene understanding, and shared spatial anchors keep two players aligned on the same
physical diorama.
Local session server
A small Windows server tracks team state, brokers communication between tablets and headsets, and runs
entirely on the museum's own network.
Modular content pipeline
Translations, quiz content, challenge data, and configurator components are data-driven for easy updating.
